Who is Digital Environmentalist?

Hello eReaders!
Welcome to my professional world - my new extended blog mainly dedicated for my academic endeavour in the field of civil and environmental engineering, including urban planning, environmental management, and real estate development. Why on those areas? I will explain why my academic interests focused on them by giving you the stages of my learning process, from inside the classroom to the outside world of living.
I did my bachelor degree in Civil Engineering in a state university but prior to that course, I did a 3-year diploma in Civil Technology at the same school. At the age of 19, I started working full time in the university, while taking classes during the evening. Upon completion of BS degree, I took the state board/licensure exam and fortunately I passed it. Eventually, I decided to resign from my first job and joined a local council/government planning office. From that work as a Planning Officer, my interest in planning and enviromental issues grew as the years past until I attended a 20-month postgraduate program in urban planning at the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand) with a full scholarship grant.
My third job offered me alot of opportunities in the development and management of environmental and business trainings for professionals in developing countries. Time flies, I decided to go back to my home country and applied my knowledge gained from working abroad. But after 7 years, I decided to go back again to school to further hone my expertise which I took a research program in environmental engineering at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia). Fortunately I got an AusAID scholarship for two years and after that I went back to my home country again and I joined a consulting firm which mainly manages foreign funded environmental projects. With my dedication to my work, it seems that Ive been working in that firm for so many years, but in reality I only stayed for one year. I love my work but I have to grab the rare opportunity to take a doctoral program abroad (Northern Ireland, UK) with full scholarship! Well, the rest is still on-going ...

Time flies and it is almost 5 years now when I embarked in my doctoral program. It is a struggle and I do hope that by early 2011 I will successfully submit my revised thesis for the conferment of my degree. I did pass the oral defence a year ago, but it is just Im already burned out and for the past months, I strugged to look for job opportunities elsewhere, consequently affected my focus and motivation to sit-down and finish my corrections. Anyway, no regrets at all and Im very optimistic to hurdle this personal struggle and be able to achieve what I really wanted in life!

Higher Learning and Climate Change

WHEN I STARTED MY RESEARCH 4 years ago, one of the motivations why I decided to pursue higher education is to contribute to the knowledge-base on environmental management, specifically on how we could utilise land resource effeciently and effectively. In particular, I want to identify strategies on how to redevelop or regenerate underutilised/unproductive land (greyfields), the brownfields - properties that have been utilised for a single use (industrial, parking, etc) or simply to revitalise downtown areas or urban centres with derelict land and buildings to increase choice, convenience, and vitality resulting in social, economic and environmental benefits. This can be promoted by intensification of land uses through "mixed-use form".

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT is considered as one of the mechanisms to regenerate these properties into liveable, attractive and sustainable communities. Mixed-use scheme is an integral ingredient of urban redevelopment to promote compactness, social equity, economic vitality and ennvironmental quality. Unfortunately, environmental quality is not directly discussed in my research, however, there are attributes or indicators in mixed-use scheme that are identified that influenced in the performance and optimisation of the mix" of use within the project. These attributes are included in the physical characteristics of the projects such as: functional and physical lay-out, type and quality of contruction materials, provision for parking, air conditioning system, cooling and ventilation, and energy effeciency rating. In addition, there are indicators that describe the environmental setting and condition of the sites (where these mixed-use schemes are located) which also indicate sustainability.

Im very honest in my previous journals that Im not an "avid fan" of Climate Change or Global Warming issues, however I do believe that we have our own little way to protect our Mother Earth. There are other issues that need much greater attention from both the communities and the government that influence the drastic change of our climate.

To this end, continuing higher education is one of the aspects that support environmental protection, preservation and management through the conduct of research in built environment (real estate, property investment, infrastructures, housing, etc.). Providing more funds and resources to pursue higher learning is one way of enriching the knowledge base and sharing information to the public as a whole.

Note: Some examples of mixed-use projects will be posted here very soon!

Bag for Life... every little helps from TESCO

I love shopping and everyone does!

Every week I buy my groceries, including magazines and office supplies from TESCO. Since this is a regular routine I applied for its Club card membership which every shopper gets vouchers for every pound (£) being spent. The vouchers do not have a cash redemption value, but these are exchanged for goods and services (excluding on-line) as equivalent to the face value printed on it.

Aside from the vouchers, every shopper has given coupons to gain extra points as addiitonal bonus points from the purchases. One of the coupons is the free 'green' plastic bag - the Bag for Life! Using it will also accumulate extra 'green clubcard points.

TESCO's green bag is a simple initiative from a retail industry that every shopper will benefit from using it. It reduces the massive disposal of plastic bags from the store. The bag is thick and strong enough to hold goods more than twice the weight of the regular/old plastic bag can contain, which means a ratio between 1:2 and 1:2.5. It can be purchase at 10p and can be exchanged if it is already worn-out for free.

It is really a substantial saving on the part of TESCO and it becomes more manageable for shoppers to re-use the green bag compare to the thin plastic bags that most of the time it cant be re-use anymore.

Aside from this green bag initiative, TESCO is also encouraging shoppers to return the used old thin plastic bags by dropping them to the designated plastic bins that are found outside the entrance of the stores.

Green thinking for a healthy and enjoyable shopping! Every little helps from TESCO makes a big difference to shoppers and to the community as a whole!

I support the Blog Action Day!

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

TODAY I expressed my support to the organiser of the Blog Action Day. I signed up and I will do my best to post something about the environment starting today (and on a regular basis).

Being an environmental/urban planner by profession, I do believe everyone has its own little way to help increase the level of awareness of the people around the world in the importance of protecting, conserving and preserving our natural resources for the next future generations.

Mother Earth is crying out for our continuous effort to save her from any environmental destruction. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the land we live are vital for everyone's sustainable existence!

An initiative for bringing us bloggers together for one noble cause - Save our Mother Earth!

Watch out for my journal on the 15th October as the Blog Action Day which will focus on one of my MPhil thesis' chapters on attitudes of stakeholders towards waste disposal siting.

The Blog Action Day is reminding me of my ultimate aim why I created this blog, The DigitalEnvironmentalist in January 2007, which is to share my knowledge and ideas about my profession.

Enjoy green blogging!
